1. Character Archetypes
Put the following in your notebooks:
A. The link below features explanations of complex literary archetypes that include the light and shadow sides -- the positive and negative aspects of the archetypes personalities and behaviors. Think of two characters from WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE and two from AS I LAY DYING and explain which archetype seems to fit them. Extrapolate using details from the online text and details from the film and novel.
B. You, as a person, are not fully one type of archetype or another, but you probably do see descriptions in these that fit your personality and life experiences thus far. A. In your notebook, look for your notes on SYMBOLISM. Compare them to the link analyzing and interpreting symbolism. If you can't find the notes in your notebook, add them today.
B. Take another look at the archetypal meanings of different symbols and motifs in the film. Below are various links for the archetypal, symbolic, or dream meanings of various symbols. The first two cover the big, general symbols. The remaining specific ones are provided for the "harder to find" symbols.
